The story II continued by WALTER HARTRIGHT is really one of the most interesting and crucial, as it deals with the notification of SIR PERCIVAL GLYDE´S death to LAURA.It is also very curious to find out ANNE CATHERIN´S parentage and before all the expected wedding. How brave WALTER is trying to meet COUNT FOSCO in order to clear up LAURA´S status. PESCA´S appearance, who was practically forgotten in the course of the novel, is also surprising.
Julio, a very good comment. I agree with everything you say. It was quite clever of Walter to think that Pesca could help. However there are two points which are not clear yet, one is Walter's marriage. Who is Walter going to marry? Laura, who is dead according to the law, or Anne, admitting then that Laura is dead?? I don't know how Collins is going to tackle that point. Maybe it is not so important for the story but it disturbs me as I find it is a flaw!
I am a little disappointed about Wilkie Collins. The characters of his novel are saints or devils. Mrs Catherick´s letter shows so wicked woman that it is difficult to believe. Was it necessary? The mistery of the novel have been disclosed in such a evident way that I have lost interest. In my opinion, a good work must be less explicit. Besides, generally speaking, people are more complex. On the other hand, I also think that the wedding between Walter and Laura is impossible. Legally she is death. There is another matter that I want to mention. Mrs. Clemens was like a mother to Anne. However Anne´s greatest wish was to rest next to Mrs. Fairly. I know that she is a madwoman, but this fact left me feeling sad. Mrs. Clemens was only a good friend to her, in spite of her love and dedication to Anne.
Pablo Advanced 1-F Hello Wow for firs time Count Fosco is surprised with somebody, and the person who surprised Count Fosco is Mr Pesca, so Mr Pesca doesn’t remember what link The Count with him, and Walter is getting nervous… I don´t know what will happen, but this part It has been the most thrilling for me. If Walter had not gone with Pesca to the theatre, Walter would not have discovered Count Fosco´s secret.
It seems that Fosco has his Achilles´ heel. I really wanted to see him in similar circunstances. Count Fosco is in fear of somebody, and this person is the Walter´s most close friend. Fosco´s face revealed him. It is time for him to suffer for his behavior.
Hello guys,....regarding the last revelation on which Count Fosco is placed as a member of a secret society I pointed out a living weakness from Fosco which doesn´t tie up with his personality. Throughout the novel Fosco is portrayed as accomplished being capable of whichever evil to achieve his target. Now, Wilkie Collins uses an amaizing vehicle by way of secret association. This fact disappoints me as it´s both unexpected and beyond of reality. In addition, I wonder how Count Fosco could be unnoticed as he is a stout man who draws anyone attention. It would seem Count Fosco has take Brotherhood for granted and now his life might be in danger. See you!
Mercedes, shows herself as an awful person..., legally she is dead.., I don't agree about Mrs. Catherick. She is what we expected and what Mrs. Clements said. What she did to her daughter shows that she is terrible and when we meet her I was not disappointed, she is the worst possible person as I expected. I agree about Mrs. Clements and the wedding. Anne was herself ungreatful, her mother's daughter? And the wedding is totally unbelievable, who did he marry? And how are they going to solve the legal problem generated when Laura appears alive? I still think, though, that the novel is a good novel, think that novels were written mainly for women and it fulfills its task of entertaining in my opinion
Pablo, surprised by anybody.., was Pesca.., Fosco had with him.., this part has been the most..., Yes I agree with you, this is a very interesting part and Walter had a very good idea. I think the plot is very well done as everything is getting in its place.
Mercedes, Walter's closest friend.., behaviour..., I couldn't agree more!! Fosco has, as we expected, a skeleton in his wardrove too. Now Walter can do something! Let's see what the intelligent Fosco does...
Julian, by way of a..., and not credible.., everybody's attention.., has taken the Brotherhood.., I see it completely differently, for me the fact that Fosco belongs to a secret society is very credible. I think that Fosco has become fat probably as a disguise, maybe he was very thin when he was young and that is why Pesca did not recognise him. Fosco is intelligent, he would do anything to serve his ends, even putting on weight. The fact that he walks so naturally in the streets of London, proves that he felt certain of not being discovered, that is why he was so shocked when he saw Pesca. I don't know, but for me it is credible...
I have to admit that I don´t like this kind of novels. However, it has been interesting to me up to a few chapters ago. In my opinion, it is too bizarre. If "the object of the Brotherhood is the destruction of tyranny, and the assertion of the rights of the peolple" how can be Fosco a member of it? His personality is against this sort of commitments. Besides, Fosco is connected with Walter´s close friend. What a coincidence!
Mercedes, interesting for me.., how could Fosco be.., You think so? I think possibly Fosco was different when he was a young man, then he could have left the Brotherhood because it did not meet his purposes and interests. Do you think that Pesca seems to be proud of the Brotherhood? He is like ashamed of it, I think. The problem was that the Brotherhood had its rules and that the members had sworn those rules....
Yesterday in our class we talked about Walter and Laura´s marriage. I think the author could be write that event two chapter later, when the legal personality of Laura will be restored. There is an opportunity to get it. If Count Fosco confesses when Laura leave Limmerdige House to travel to London and this date was after the day when she was supposals death. In this case the lie would be proved and Laura will have the opportunity to restore her life. The appearance in this chapter of Professor Pesca is fantastic because it proves the author's quality. How is it possible to have all characters of the novel in his mind? No elements of the novel has been written accidentally, for instance, the fact that Pesca is Italian is crucial for the story because also Count Fosco is Italian. Pesca has the feeling that his life belonges to Walter because he saved him of drowning and if Walter needed some help, Pesca would help him.
The novel was written by Collins as a serial. This periodical system of publication forces the novelist to write in a different way. Although he made important revisions for the 1861 edition, I think that some reiterations are due to this fact. In my opinion it makes the novel easy to read without a dictionary. The book is similar to a current soap opera. It is necessary some rhetorical explanations to follow the story. I think that is why the narration seems a little repetitive. Now we have to know the story told by Fosco, or rather, the document which he has wanted to write.
The wickedness of FOSCO towards humans is shown when he offers a piece of tart to themonkey which the italian who is grinding an organ in the street has .However he treats the poor man contemptuosly not dropping a single penny to him.It is beyond my understanding why an apparent animal lover can be so bad towards humans. For me FOSCO is incomprehensible.
In my opinion, Fosco is despicable. The opera´s chapter reminds me the Nazi´s time. They were cultured people, very sensitive to music, but they were incapable of empathizing with other human beings. I think that Collins chose Lucrezia Borgia´s opera to write this chapter because it is the most suitable for the occasion. It is perfect to understand how Fosco is.
Fosco admits his fascination for Chemistry. He likes its power and he knows how uselful it is to achieve his target, because it can change people´s brains. Is it true that he only uses his knowledge of this science twice? I am not sure. It seems to me that he want to protect his reputation. He also admits to worshiping Mariam, but in spite of his statement I have my doubts about his behaviour.
I have just finished the novel!I can't believe it.I have enjoyed this book a lot and I have liked its analysis at the school. The best part in this pages has been Count Fosco's confession. Itś incredible how he try to justify himself because of his conspiration and it's a pity that he die before the duel with Walter. I think than this duel had been the end of Walter, so I suppose that Collins avoided that situation and prefered a happy end.
02/05 Pablo Advanced 1-F Hello Fantastic the part about the conversation between Count Fosco and Walter!!! For sure Fosco is the best character in the novel, what a cool brain he has, he is a gentleman in all time and he always takes his time for a decision… He told to Walter that he was plotting alone what doing with Anne and how they could take money… And Fosco loves Marian so much or may be is not love is admiration, he admires Marian, he thinks she is fantastic, he feels like 18 years old !!! Walter shows us he is very brave and he has courage find Fosco in the night and speaking and arguing for Laura´s sake… The end is being very interesting
I fall in love with Fosco. Very rarely have I seen such a generous person. He has been a little angel. He is always thinking about the rest of the people. If Anne hasn´t died he would have hold her to leave this awful prison. His feelings prevents him from shuting up Laura in the asylum again. Didn´t Marian realizes that he was really fond of her? What a thoughtless person! When she read Fosco´s confession she will be regretful about her behaviour. He is a misundestood person. Very seldon does one see such a touching modesty.
Fosco speaks about victorian wives. They must love, honour and obey their husbands. Madame Fosco is a perfect wife who does her duty. He admits men´s supreme moral elevation. His wife is like one of his pets. She performs according to his wishes, after he tamed her. I imagine that Fosco doesn´t love her wife, but she helps him to gain his objective. If Fosco admires Marian he only can feel sorry for Eleonor. Very rarely have I seen such a nice name in the novel. She isn´t a person, she is Fosco´s wife.
Fosco could kill Anne, but she died before. Fosco could be poisoning Anne, but it wasn´t necessary. Madame Fosco could have avoid that the doctor would register Anne´s death, but she didn´t do it. The truth could have been discovering before, but it had to sell a lot of weekly newspapers. The story could be rewrite by Collins before the book edition.
On the third epoch, chapter VII,we read how brave WALTER is facing the wicked COUNT FOSCO. At the same time it is very funny to see how he falls asleep while his shrewd wife watches WALTER and even dares to menace him with her malicious words.
07/05 Pablo Advanced 1-F Hello I really like this novel, during 6 months I have enjoyed very much the reading everyday, and commenting in class. But I have a problem with the end I don´t like Count Fosco has died or he be killed by the man whit a scarf. At least Laura, Walter and Marian will have a good life because Walter and Laura´s son will be the hair of limmeridge.
What a pity! In spite of Marian´s personality she ended up doing what other woman would do at that time. Walter is surrounded by women until a now man appear. The end can´t be most suitable to promote the Victorian´s ideals. I had a similar great-aunt. A single woman had a restricted future by society.
What can be seen in the story written by COUNT FOSCO,besides many explanations so far undiscovered, it is the admiration he had for MARIAN.However cannot be denied that his love for money was far greater and we can say that his ambition and cunning was even superior to his close friend´s SIR PERCIVAL GLYDE.At the same time,FOSCO´S gratitude to his wife is shown as well as his sympathy for the wives of ENGLAND.
I don´t like the moral of the novel and I don´t believe the end of the story. Can Fosco belonge to a brotherhood like this? He always acts in his own interest. It is a easy way to kill him whitout Walter´s intervention. The wicked person must have his punishment, but we have to hope the divine justice. On the other hand, men are the heros in the book. Marian gets Laura out of the asylum because Fosco fall in love with her. He allowed her to do that. Our dear Marian has to take care of Laura while Walter carries out the hard work. It is normal in the 19th century and now.
Well, Basically, this novel could be as amazing as anyone can imagine but I must say that it is not practical at all, for sure. You can't learn from a nineteenth's century novel the nowadays language. So, every native I talk to about this novel was shocked as the official novel for students. So, great decision! What a pity! In spite of Marian´s personality she ended up doing what other woman would do at that time. Walter is surrounded by women until a now man appear. The end can´t be most suitable to promote the Victorian´s ideals. I had a similar great-aunt. A single woman had a restricted future by society.
Marta, I want to thank your sister for getting the theater tickets. "The Suit" is the best play I have seen this year.
