During the year 2010-2011 the A1s are going to read this novel written by Charlotte Brontë. We hope you'll enjoy it, please post your comments on the space provided.
Mariana, a very good comment, I agree entirely with you. It is terrible that he puts God into it. It is a resource often used by fanatics, thank God Jane had more sense. One can imagine StJohn manipulating poor weaker people in that way, he is horrible! I wonder Bronte created such a character, so negative, she being the daughter of a clergyman and the wife of one too.
Rosa, I agree! What a sentence!! It shows how unkind and unfeeling he could be! He is terrible. Rosamund did very well in marrying someone else, she would have been unhappy with him. And the way he tries to manipulate Jane is terrible. It doesn't matter to him if she lives or dies as long as she does what he wishes!! Worst possible man, religion doesn't come off very well in the novel I don't think! Would you agree?
Rosa, I absolutly agree with you, it is horrible that sentence. But I think about the difference between Mr. St.J. and Mr. Rocherster' character and life in general¡¡¡, meanwhile Mr.Rocherster wants to go with Jane to whatever place without marry, Mr. St.J. is not able to go to any place because they are not married, he says that it is impossible to go to abroad a single man with a single woman.
Well, I think of Mr. St. Jhon's idea is normal and respectful at that time more sensible that Mr. Rocherster'idea but the subject is two different ways to think and to chose between feeling or the principles
Mercedes, that sentence is horrible.., while Mr. R wants... without marrying, it is impossible for a single man to go abroad with a single woman.., two differnt ways of thinking and of chosing between.., You are absolutely right. They are two sides of the coin. I must say that I prefer Mr.R by far!!!
J is not a traditional woman. She does not want the security of marrying and for this reason she rejects Mr SJ's marriage proposal. She would prefer to marry the man who she loves. she depends on nothing because she has not ties with nobody. She lives thanks to her intelligent, her abilities, her good manners; all the values that Mr. SJ would like to take from her; but J can not accept that offer. She is not going dominated by a man and unless by a selfish man.
Beatriz, she has not ties with anybody.., thanks to her intelligence.., she is not going to be dominated by a man and least of all a selfish one. Yes you have a point but I do think that Jane does not marry StJohn because she doesn't love him. She is prepared to go with him but not as his wife. She is determined to marry only for love. Not everybody did it at that time. For example Georgiana and Rosamund, they married but not for love. Don't you think??
I completely agree with Mariana. I hope Mr. Rochester is not ill or death. I should say that, as Jane, I am waiting for information about him. Someone in class suggested St. John’s stealing the letters. Well, I don’t think that is what is happening, but it is strange that Mrs. Fairfax is not answering. Maybe, Mrs. Fairfax is not well. Also I agree that chapter 34 is fantastic. Finally, Jane has shown her nature and she has stopped doing everything St. John wanted her to do. I hope she will keep her decision, because St. John can be very insistent and persuasive. Reading his last words at the end of chapter 34, it seemed to me that he is going to insist again.
I find that Mr Rivers is a very dangerous man. You see, when Mr Rochester you were able to see that he was not a good person, but with Mr Rivers it's very difficult, also because his purposes are uterly pure and honorable. And he is a snake haunter: Jane was about to do what he said. He can make the people do as he say s.He is merciless, cold, stern, hard, proud, and even, vindicative, which I think is not very christian: in a moment in the novel, Jane compares him with a pagan philosofer, or even with a Greek god. Greek gods, if you know the mitology, were very beautiful, but also very cruel. They got mad because of very silly things.
But Jane is more concerned about her personality than about men: if it were other thing, she would become Mr Rochester lover, or Mr Rivers wife. Even being Mr Rochester a bad man who has done terrible things, he is interesting and sympathetic, and if I were Jane, I would rather prefer Mr Rochester to Mr Rivers, because Rochester is true and loves Jane in a not selfish way. Mr Rivers doesn't love her: he only wants her as a tool, a helper, an assistant, not a real wife. He doesn't want her as a sister, because a sister can be taken away of him, and a wife can't, unless, of course, she would die: I think this is the real reason because of he doesn't want Jane to come with him as a single woman.
In the chapter 35,the third paragraph seems to me fantastic as description of Mr. Rivers.when I read this chapter I felt the same sensation than Jane. What a icy man! I agree with all you,St.John is cruel;perhaps, he has been such worried for sustaining a fierce discipline about his feeling, that he has lost his soul and without spirit people become in a stone or ice
The episode with Mr.Rivers has caused a profound impact on me.Such cruel man!.Although, I have to admit that it serves an important function:Jane learns to know herself and her ambitions by experimencing different modes of life ( Mr.Rivers is the opposite of Mr.Rochester)Why is Ch.Brontë so hard on him? To marry a cousin is not admisable.Then...
Hi everyone, I haven't been able to put the photo up, Mercedes, I am sorry I am terrible with the computer. Amparo I agree in chapter 35 we see the cruelty that StJohn exercises and it is a good lesson for Jane,
How are you doing?? Persevere, these last days are very important for everything we have been saying to settle down.I hope you are doing fine and showing off all your knowledge!
Hi Marta, ¡Congratulation for your new "marital status" I whish you all happiness, (I'm sure you will be happy). It is possible we can not post photos on the blog, me either I am expert with the computer , I think you can attach the photos on facebook, or place like that. But, anyway, did you look good? I suppose so, you were a pretty bride, let us know at class next day. Do you know the time of the lecture? On the other hand, on Saturday I went to theatre and I saw Richard III, it was fantastic, superb, they were brilliant actors, the music was perfect, even the light on the stage was well done. Although the dialogs were longs and not very easy to understand I can follow the play from subtitles. I liked it a lot.
I also went to Teatros Canal to see Richard III, and, altough I didn´t like at all the stage, set, costumes and other things, I think the acting was fantastic, and the actors pretty good. It worths to go and listen to them even if you don't understand nothing, because the recitacion was really good. But the play was, in my opinion, too much longer, and the tickets, expensive. Even so, I think it worthed it.
Welcome back Marta! and Congratulations on your wedding one more time!.
I missed you the last two Tuesdays when was time to summarise "Jane Eyre". And now Jane is about to married Mr. Rochester. What a cooincidence!. Tomorrow the novel will be over.. It is a pìty.
Throughout her period at Thornfield,Jane refers to Rochester as "master"and sir.The nature of the relationship was clearly unbalanced. In the chapter 38,Jane finally achieves happiness and satisfaction. Her relationship with Mr.Rochester in no longer of master and sevant, but equals. That is fantastic. It seems to me that Charlotte Brontë's ideas were way ahead of her time.
I think that, making the thing very simple, one of the main messages of the book is that the poor, plain, not well relationed, most umpopular girl of the high-school (Jane), has tamed the bad boy (Rochester), and now he is good. This has not change much since those days: there are still many woman who love the bad guys, because they think they can cahnge them. But what woman wouldn't want to conquer a man in this way?
Hi! I´m sad, the reading of Jane Eyre finished, It´s a pity because the novel, at least, is a thriller, and it´s very interesting. Our heroin finaly has a good end, as all of us expected, which makes this moment a little bit better. Thank you for all your comments whose reading make that my english improves. And, of course, thank you Marta for this good year. Good holidays for everyone!!!
Rosa, it is worth going and listening to them even if you don't understand anything.. The expression is: to be worth it.
Mª Jesús, I must say I am glad you missed me!!! Thank you for telling me and for your congratulations. Yes Jane got married like me, I hope that after 10 years I'll be able to say something similar to what she says....
Amparo, a very good and true comment!! You are very right we have moved from the master servant relationship to one of equals, though, and even to one that goes a little further in the sense that Mr. Rochester is now dependent on Jane as he is blind and crippled.
Rosa, this has not changed... You are right about women wanting to get a bad boy and change him but it is impossible. Don't you think??? Very few people change, Rochester, one must say is another person. A pity in a way.... Deep down he was always a good boy probably
Mónica, whose reading makes my English improve.. Thank you for your comments about me. I am very glad that you liked the novel and the blog and to know that they have helped. Next year we will read another novel and make more comments so get ready for that!!!
I'm afraid it's a bit late to enjoy this blog but I just wanted to point out that I've found the novel really interesting. Difficult as it may seem to be -regarding the vocabulary-, it has provided me with lots of amusing moments. In fact, now that it's over I feel that kind of lonelyness that comes up when you finish a good one. Good night to everyone.
MªJosé, good night everyone... I am so glad you say so!! What a true comment! Yes, the novel is good but you have also appreciated it which is fantastic. I hope that next year you will like the one we choose.
I want to say that I am glad of having shared with you on the blog. We gathered around an amazing book as Jane Eyre. This novel has given into us all kind of emotions:suffering, joy,be touched,disturbed...and,perhaps,to be changed our life with a new vision of life ,beauty...
I agree with Monica "Thank you Marta for this good year" Thanks for your desire "good night" I slept better. Goodbye
