Carmen, I forgot to ask you a thing. Where is the picture, which you showed us a friday, where the landscape seemed to be like the one that Keats describes in The Eve of St. Agnes?? Do you remember what I am saying? It is very useful for me now that we are talking about the relation between literature and works of art, I mean pictures, music or whatever... And it is perfect!! Hi! Maria. Today we have been spoken about motivation in our class. I quite agree with you, and I also agree with the article. I was in London for three months ten thirteen years ago. At that time, English wasn’t important to me, not even staying there. I didn’t learn anything, In fact, I come back having learnt only how to say good morning, sorry, and, how much is this? At present I really want to speak English and it is very easy for me to do it. Why used I to think it was an unachievable task? It was obviously because I wasn’t motivated. As it is said in the reading I didn’t want to learn. It was my husband that wanted me to do it, but not me, actually. I wouldn’t like to be an Etonian or to have an Etonian Son, even if I had enough money to pay it for my two sons. They are people very well educated and very high class, but, have they been happy boys?
Exactly Paloma. Etonians are very clever and much workers, privileged people if you want, but are they happy? Wasting childhood and adolescence, is it really worth it? They live in a bubble so they haven´t a real sight of life, only their perspective... I don´t know, but I don´t envy them! I don´t need the Nobel to be happy, though it would be great! ;)

I cannot post an specific scene but I have seen a few British TV series, most of them from the 80's, which I strongly recommend. One of them is "Yes, Minister"about a Minister for Administrative Affairs who always chocks with the machinations of his Permanent Secretary. Another one is "Fawlty Towers" by John Cleese, one of the members of Monty Python, set in a 1970's Torquay hotel.

About motivation, I think this is a essential requirement for learning. I'm telling you my case, my husband is English, and what could suppose an advantage it is not, actually. I met him in Spain at time when I didn't speak English at all, so we spoke in spanish and, of course, he improved a lot due to my patience. Therefore, I did not learn English and I couldn´t communicate with his family when we went to visit them in England, which make me feel so embarrased, that I decided to take lessons at language School. It has been what has increased my motivation, the teachers and the class-mates I have met, and all the resources they put in our disposition.
Well Roberto, I suppose everything depends on the person and on the age of the boy. If you are a child of 11 or 12, perhaps being separated of your family and friends could be hard. In fact one the People who cannot stand this kind of life was our Wilkie Collins. If you are a sensible boy, I don’t know but I think it must be very arduous; and not only because of the discipline, but also because at that age, boys can be very harmful; it is really difficult to know where the line is. Don’t you think? I was sent to study to another city a week after being 17; although I used to see my family every weekend or every other weekend, it was hard for me. I used to miss terribly my home, you know, this twee thing we call “calor de hogar”. So I believe that living in a college where you are demanded a lot in your studies and in every aspects of your life, if in addition you miss your family, or your mates are mobbing you, you know, it must be quite difficult, and make some people feel unhappy.
Hello Raquel! Welcome back! Your case it’s very interesting, and shows that I’m not the only one who having been in contact with “English things” hasn’t been interested in learning the language. Anyway both of us have corrected ourselves on time and now we are almost “Bilingual” people, are we not?

Dear classmates, you will probably read this comment in several of the sections showed in this blog. I have done it on purpose.
Having attended to Friday’s class in the computer room, I must say something related to it. Those of you being interested in learning English language well can not miss these moments. You will never have the chance of understanding Shakespeare, Keats, Wordsworth, etc, who have made English be the most important language all around the world again. In addition, you start to appreciate Carmen’s wise and feel like keeping going till you reach her knowledge during your life.
Therefore, not only must you attend to usual classes, but also doing it on Friday’s.

I have just read your comments on the blog. I was thinking about funny scenes in novels and I have reread Maria´s comment about "La venganza de Don Mendo". Really it is a funny play. Muñoz Seca is not Shakespeare or Cervantes but when you read the book you can´t help laughing. I also remember Fernando Fernan Gómez ´s performance as Don Mendo, very funny.

I haven´t understood the subjunctive and participle, could you help, please?
For example, I know there is subjunctive with verb want+infinitive with to (I want you to stay), are there another verbs with this structure?
And there is subjunctive with make+infinitive without to (He made me go), but if I say:"He let me go", is it correct?, is this subjunctive? I think so because there are 2 subjects, but I don´t know.
There are subjunctive with "suggest" (I suggest his going to Eton: subjunctive of gerund) and "preference sentences" (I´d rather he go to Eton: proper subjunctive).
But there is subjunctive with "that clause", could you explain this to me, please? and what is participle? How many structures of participle are there?
I´m very worried about it. I need your help, please!!

I agree with you, we have learnt a lot along this year, in part for our studying the novel but also for your encouragement. Probably by our reading the novel is the reason why we have learnt english in a funny way, people are entertainnig but also are studying.

Hi Laura, is very important for your learning, the teacher you have in your class. I do not Know who is he or she but it would be good that you say the name. It could be a good idea to examine the teacher as a form to force him or her to improve her/himself.
In my situation, with Carmen, I am very happy, I think that I have learnt along this year.

I don't think it would be a good idea to say the name of the teacher. Many people do their best, although sometimes the results shouldn't be the ones we are expecting. Perhaps he or she is making a great effort, not all people are the same, you know? Some people work very hard to get a 5, and other people get a 10 without effort. As pupils we also can work to improve ourselves, I mean, if your teacher doesn't give you everything perfectly explained, you may go to a library and look the subjects up in grammar's books. Of course a good teacher is important, but a good student is equally important. ¿Can we throw the firs stone? How many are there in Laura's class? And, she is the only one worried about her level, and the rest? Have they got a good level, or are they not concerned obout this subject? Think about this.

My teacher is very hard-working and she/he is making a great effort. I think she/he is very good at english, but she/he doesn´t teach subjunctive and another things. My classmates have never heard subjunctive. they don´t know what it is (for example).

Good luck to everyone, I expect any of you should win a prize, you deserve it, all of you have done a good work with the blog and the novel. But if none of us win it does not matter, because we are already winners, in fact, we are “the winners” since we are the ones who are learnt more (I’m not sure whether this construction is right). Today we have set the copy of the comments in the courtyard of the School, once printed the blogs are beautiful and I ‘ve felt very proud of ourselves and the work we have done. We are not only de winners, but also the best. Congratulations mates.
Yes, Paloma, I totally agree with you! The blog has made us improve our English and enjoy ourselves! It has been the best idea and the best motivation. I would never imagine that I could write sentences fluently without dictionary. This year is being the best year: the novel which we have read, the theater, our film club, of course all poems, understanding Shakespeare (with Carmen´s help, thank you!), etc. All of us have won the prize! Congratulations!

Who kills Fosco?
I think Pesca but it is not very clear
I am not sure about Count Fosco's Killer, he could have been Pesca, but also the stranger with a scarf in his cheek.
I think that Pesca has changed since his arrival to England, probably he, in his hard times in Italy, could have killed someone, but now in England he has changed a lot and he has been recycled in a beautiful person.
It is strange that he is in a hurry to leave Paris, probable you have reason and he has been obliged to kill the Count and he fells bad.
Who kills Fosco!!! I found it very difficult. I didn´t think about Pesca when I finished the book but It could be. I thought Collins didn´t want to say it. But you´re in reason. May be Pesca Killed Fosco.
P.S. excuse my mistakes
JAvier I totally agree with you. It is difficult to think of Pesca as a killer, because he seems to be a good person. But it is clear that he has something dark in his past besides belonging to the Brothershood. As time goes by I am thinking he is the killer because somewhen Pesca says that he is in London waiting for an order, but this order never arrived until it arrived (I can´t explain myself, it is so late, sorry). Do you know what I mean? Scarf man is the one who ordered him to kill Fosco or maybe both killed Fosco. No, it is not very clear
It wasn’t Pesca who killed the Count. I’ll try to demonstrate it:
“At the eleventh hour, Pesca decided that he would accompany me. He had not recovered his customary cheerfulness since the night at the opera; and he determined to try what a week’s holiday would do to raise his spirits”
Reading this paragraph you can think he has been ordered to go to Paris, even more, after the night at the opera he seems to be fearing this call. But, on the other hand, this history could be true; Pesca remembered his own history and feels unwell.
“On the morning of the fifth day, (Pesca is supposed to have been calm and happy the four previous days) I went up-stairs to see if the professor was ready to go out. Just before I reached the landing, I saw his door opened from the inside; a long, delicate, nervous hand (not my friend’s hand certainly) held it ajar. At the same time I heard Pesca’s voice saying eagerly, in low tones, and in his own language: “I remember the name, but I don’t know the man. You saw at the Opera, he was so changed that I could not recognise him. I will forward the report - I can do no more. “No more need be done” answered a second voice ….”
After this last sentence, I think it was the man with the scarf, and not Pesca, that killed Fosco
The following paragraph shows me that Pesca went to Paris for the very reason that Walter has told us in the beginning, and there he was surprised by the events:
“I am afraid he has brought you bad news?”
“Horrible news, Walter! Let us go back to London – I don’t want to stop here- I am sorry I ever came…”
So what I think it came is that Pesca was seen in Paris and, since he's the Secretary, ordered to make the report.

You could be right, Paloma, but then why does Pesca have to write the report? What report? Remember he has not opened the letter and he knows nothing of what the Count had done.
The only thing that exonerates Pesca in my opinion is the fact that Collins does not condemn him and he becomes the godfather of the newborn baby.
But why does he go to Paris?
Currently, Pesca would have been the executioner, because we need to be shown what he himself confessed and that is that you are trapped in the web of the bratherhood for ever.
As to having to write the report he is not the Secretary any more, or so he said.
There has been a secret meeting with the man with the scar whaich we were not told of before!!
I think Collins dies not reveal the mystery.
Why? Is he trying to say that we ought to beware of appearances?

In my composition about Pesca I told Carmen that Pesca is the only one who gets nothing in this story. The rest of the characters, included the supposed good ones, obtain something in the end. Perhaps this is only the moral of the fable: the bad ones die and the good ones get everything, which, by the way, is the only important thing in English Literature as Damaso explained. But undoubtedly it is Walter that achieves more: A wife beautiful and rather simple, a son, a fortune, two very good friends (Pesca and Marian), a housekeeper (Mrs. Clemens), perhaps his mother and sister better established, better connections… Even his first name ennobled, since his son is a boy and, in the future, the owner of Limeridge will be a Hartright.
It isn’t bad, is it?.
I must admit that I have forgotten many details concerning the ending of the book and how the Count’s murder took place because of having finished two months ago (I prefer reviewing the second epoch), though I don’t think Pesca is guilty at all. The time when Walter explains him the troubles he is involved in on account of the Count, Pesca begs his friend not to be told anything else related that issue due to he is not willing to be forced to undertake action against Fosco, that is to say, to kill him for being a traitor of the secret society which they joined in the past.
As for Mr. Hartright, I completely agree with Carmen’s opinion. In the end of the story and after reaching his schedules, in every way, he might become arrogant and haughty and everybody knows that power can make us both blind and forget who we were.
Dear Paloma, the worst character in the novel is the Countess, in my opinion, and she doesn’t die.
I agree, Roberto in the fact that the Countess is very wicked, but she lost as well, in fact she is one of the greatest losers in the novel. She doesn’t have any soul, since she gave hers to her husband, she has neither freedom nor will, his life was her husband and now he is died. She has no connections, no family, no one in the world who takes care of her, no love at all. She is now the second Mrs. Catherick, but, this time in a foreign country. Even as a widow she is working and living for her husband, that’s why she writes about him. She doesn’t dies but she is destroyed. She will have to live “punished” the rest of her life. Do you think she has won anything?
Paloma, You are completely right
Walter Hartright is a kind of person who gets what he wants. First of all he fell in love with Laura and not with Marian, who is the cleverest but poor. He wanted to be rich and the owner of the house and he gets it. He becomes haughty and he will never remember the way he was.
Well, I agree with all of you about Hartright's success in the end, marrying the poor rich girl ( nothing interesting, by the way), getting Marian's support to raise his son and reaping his revenge on Count Fosco with Pesca's help, who was indebted to him.
However, I think Collins writes what common people wanted to listen to in the 19th century. I mean, the triumph of real love over nobility, beauty ( Laura) over intelligence (Count Fosco)and truth over deceit.

The Countess is not as wicked as some of you can think. Consider, she is capable of love, loving someone, even if you carry it too far, can exonerate you morally (??),even legally. Is it in America where a wife cannot bear testimony against her husband? The Countess´ behaviour obeys a "law" of Loyalty to her husband, whom she worships.Even after death her life is devoted to the remembrance of his name: she writes his biography and sends fresh flowers to his tomb!In my opinion this type of woman is contented in her obssesion, happy in her recollections of her beloved.
Rachel, don´t you think we still like to hear of this in our century? How many people were thrilled at the marriage of "La Leti"? only those who know a little of the human heart were horrified! Remember when Prince Joaquin of Denmark(??) married I don´t know who, all the world was enchanted with the fairy tale? It lasted 5 years!! In real life you do not read the last page of the novel: it describes your funeral!! that´s why we like to be fooled for a .... little while! John Milton, English poet, XVII century, describes it very well in "Paradise Lost" when Adam realizes that he has sinned. According to him this is when human beings come to terms, understand what life is all about: shitty! I´ll try and get the quote.
Oh my God! I have just read the winner essay, written by Maria as you know, and I am absolutely depressed. I think I’d never be able to write something like that. The vocabulary she uses is amazing and the general structure is wonderful. I’m green with envy!!!

These days I am focusing on the exam and keep studying whenever I have free time, but I will never let this blog stop.
Yesterday Carmen told us to read the article appearing in a magazine concerning the Event and I have to say that in spite of our class mate Patricia and her perfect interpretation of Anne Catherick I could not help feeling disappointed due to the lack of information about everything else besides the fact that the article being called “Premio de crítica literaria…”, the photograph shows all the “VIP” and avoid adding one with the winner of the prize.
Today some students in our class have been puzzled doing the rephrasing, the sentence related with “God grant you…”
It has remembered me a lyric of Roy Orbison’s, my favourite singer, it being a very beautiful one and showing this kind of subjunctive besides the way not being a subjunctive, that is to say, “God grants you”. Please, read it till its end.

Oh, it is true... I am not very sure but after due we write TO INF, don´t we? Due to means "caused by" in your sentence, so I think it must be written like that: "there're some mistakes due to take the extract from Internet". But I am not really sure, because your next sentence is understable (The extract has been taken...)!!

To is a preposition after preposition we write: a gerund, a noun o noun phrase or: due to the fact that. Is the same after but for, in spite of or despite. Always is the same and it’s very easy. You choose a simple gerund or a perfect one depending on the time. If you are speaking about a time near to the present one, you use simple gerund but if the time is long ago you use perfect gerund. I asked Carmen this question last week (the one from the time) By the way, we are Carmen’s pupils so we can’t say -ing. WE KNOW: after preposition = Gerund, is it not? Carmen told us in our last class a student of her NEVER says -ing form; we have to say gerund or present participle depending on the case. If you have any doubt about grammar ask me, I’m not very good at vocabulary but I haven’t any difficulty with grammar.
Due to is followed by the Gerund, to being a preposition.

I´m very happy that now, Roberto, you think in English when you are writing. This is because you now belong to the Club of English Speakers. During the Summer course in Bath you will become fluent in your speech. Use your time well in Bath, you know time flies. I was also disppointed not to have a picture of the winners or at least the names. they said they would send the article to be publlished beforhand but they did not. I was also disppointed about the TV, but not everything happens as you would wish. We had the Ambassador and the cocktail which was tremendusly fortunate so... María you ask if it is a participle clause, I think you need a comma before taken, so that it would be a participle clause. I’m not sure, but I think that being the participle clause an explanation, you have separate it from the main clause: En Woman in White pag 406: Arrived at the coast, we took a ship there for England. And in the rephrasing: Parked outside his house, the car has disappeared. And The children sent to bed, parents could watch the film The children sent to bed, parents could watch the film.
A participle clause is a subordinate clause, so you have to separate it from the main clause.

I am downloading a wonderful thing, is a Musical about The W in W. I’ve seen only a previsualization (esta palabra me la acabo de inventar) and the characters are exactly as how we imagine them. Fosco, particularly, is very well done. The problem is that some parts of the play seem to be quite difficult to obtain, and it has taking a long time to downloading them. Anyway, should it be completely downloaded by the dinner, I would give you a copy; on the contrary, perhaps it would be funny to meet and see the play all together.

I’m very pleased with the book I’m reading, it is full of provides, let alones, there is nots, etc. I’m very happy knowing them all. On the other hand it’s a pleasure to have time to read and see a film without the stress of having to study although I’m a bit lost and it’s difficult for me to organise my spare time, I’m always thinking I have still to study. I completely agree with Paloma. At last I can read a new book without thinking about the course. In my case I have started Jane Eyre and I hope finish it with plenty of time so that I might read Persuassion before going on Holidays to Bath.

I’m not reading The Woman in White again but I’m listening to the audio book the whole morning. I thing I know it by heart! The book I’m finishing it’s not a good one, as literature it doesn’t worth reading, but as a practice for the oral exam is not so bad, you know it is written in a very easy modern English. I began reading it, I had to stop because I wasn’t enjoying it and now I’m finishing it because I hate left a book half- reading. So far I fed up with bad people and sex. There is a lot of sex in this novel, and women speaking about it; but, as the novel are written by a man, he puts in us feelings and desires that belong only to men.
I’ve been thinking of Sir Percival, at that time the situation of a man with his conditions was quite unfair. His parents loved each other and lived together as much as they could and they don’t got married because of the injustice done against his mother for her legal husband. Sir Percival was an only son, loved by his parents who paid the best education for him. And everything that once belonged to his father must belong to another man, one who is nothing for him but a distant relative, only for the lack of a mere formality. He’s not the typical bastard, the one had out of the marriage by a man who usually does not live with his son and the mother. He is like a legal son; nowadays he would have all the rights. It doesn’t surprise me he was angry and wanted to have the title and the properties. ¡He is a poor thing!!!!

Mariah I have been reading the comments on the “foro” bur I don’t know how to post there. If we read a book together we can post our comments here as usual, this is our “little space”. Our home, the fourths’ house. Sorry ¡¡The new fifths home!!! In my opinion the important thing is reading as much as possible. The classics have their advantages, and the present writers have theirs. But in the end I suppose it’s the same as in Spanish, if you read Corin Tellado o Marcial Lafuente Estefanía, and you are a foreigner, perhaps you learnt some Spanish, but you won’t improve your vocabulary very much. Of course, if you are Spanish, you are losing your time and punishing your eyes for nothing but …! Anyway if you want become cultured and master ta language you have to read good literature, no matter if it’s classic or modern. When you make an effort to read difficult literature your mind is becoming more able to speak and understand the ordinary language. I don’t know anyone who having read a lot of literature doesn’t be very good speaking the language. Do you understand what I mean? Ana is right to a certain extent and Carmen is also right. So my point is: read something you enjoy, your favourite subject, time will fly and you will be happy and learning at the same time.
For example I’m reading this book at present: An Utterly Impartial History of Britain (Or 2000years of Upper Class Idiots in Charge) By John O’ Farrell. It’s a book about history and I’m enjoying it a lot, because History is my favourite issue to read.
